Our Mission: autistic accessible housing

Autistic Haus is dedicated to building an inclusive and supportive community for autistic adults. We envision a network of specialized accommodation options, including a respite and retreat center, all designed with Autistic Inclusive Design principles from the ground up.

Our mission is to:

 * Provide high-quality, accessible housing: Offering a range of options, from long-term residential communities to short-term respite and retreat spaces, to meet the diverse needs of autistic adults.

 * Foster community and independence: Creating a vibrant community where residents can thrive, access essential services, and pursue their passions.

 * Promote inclusivity and equity: Ensuring that our services are affordable and accessible to autistic people of all support levels, regardless of their financial means.

 * Create sustainable solutions: Developing innovative models for housing and support that are both financially and environmentally sustainable.

We believe that by working collaboratively with autistic individuals, their families, and community partners, we can create a truly transformative living experience for autistic adults.

What is Autistic Inclusive Design?

Autistic neurobiology is fundamentally different from neurotypical experiences. Our sensory processing, communication styles, and cognitive functions often differ significantly. Unfortunately, our built environment and societal structures are largely designed with neurotypical needs in mind, leading to exclusion and significant challenges for autistic individuals.

For example, sensory overload is a common experience for many autistic people. Overwhelming noise, bright lights, and cluttered spaces can be incredibly distressing and even debilitating. Many modern environments, from shopping malls to office buildings, are designed to stimulate and engage, often at the expense of creating calm and sensory-friendly spaces.

These challenges extend beyond physical environments. Social interactions, communication styles, and even the expectations of daily life can present significant barriers for autistic individuals.

Autistic Inclusive Design offers a critical framework for creating environments and systems that are truly inclusive and accessible for all. By centering autistic perspectives and prioritizing sensory needs, communication differences, and diverse learning styles, we can build a more equitable and just world for autistic individuals and society as a whole.

Where can we see Autistic Inclusive Design in Practice?

Despite growing awareness of autism, truly inclusive environments remain scarce. While there are commendable efforts to increase awareness and make minor adjustments, these often fall short of addressing the fundamental needs of autistic individuals.

Many current initiatives focus on accommodating perceived social deficits, neglecting the critical importance of creating physically and sensory-friendly environments. For example, "Autism hours" in stores may reduce sensory overload during peak times, but they do little to address the underlying design flaws that contribute to sensory overwhelm in the first place.

At Autistic Haus, we understand that true inclusivity goes beyond superficial accommodations. We prioritize the creation of environments that are:

 * Sensory-friendly: Minimizing noise, light, and visual clutter to reduce sensory overload.

 * Physically accessible: Designed to accommodate diverse physical needs and mobility requirements.

 * Culturally sensitive: Respecting autistic communication styles and honoring neurodiversity.

We believe that by creating a dedicated space where autistic individuals can thrive, we can empower them to live fulfilling and independent lives.

Welcome to Autistic Haus – a place where inclusivity is not an afterthought, but the foundation of everything we do.

Why are we not .au yet?

I began this website before Autistic Haus was a registered charity and nonprofit, when it was a hopeful ambition.

We will be moving to a .au address in the near future. In the meantime, we are a fully Australian organisation with our ABN and operational details listed at the bottom of the website.
